AMUX invites you to a lecture on the

Church of San Bartolomé (s. XIV)

By Joaquim Marques Bolufer

Wednesday, 13 de April, at 19 h.
in the Auditorium of the Museum of Xàbia

The talk will be in Castellano and English
All welcome

The origins of this important building began in the 14th century with the construction of the current apse. But the population growth and attacks by pirates and privateers in that period made it advisable to increase its fortifications, so that it could fulfill a dual purpose, both religious and defensive.
Hence in 1513, work began under the supervision of the master builder from Navarra, Domingo Urteaga.

Several crypts and funeral urns are concealed under the present day cement floor. These are probably from the 16th century but are still to be excavated.
