Talk by Josep Sapena, secretary of the Pilota Xàbia Club The Valencian version of "pelota" or handball is unique to the Valencian Community. Two players or teams compete face to face following predetermined rules by throwing a ball (or pelota) by hand. The game, of ancient but uncertain origin, is mentioned in documents dating from the 14th century on. By the 16th century 13 trinquetes or pitches existed However, football and other mass sports (supported by the communication media) put Valencian pelota out of fashion, with it only being played in the villages. Nowadays, the construction of new trinquetes and the efforts of clubs and individuals has brought about a revival of this unusual sport.
