AMUX invites you to a lecture on the
Church of San Bartolomé (s. XIV)
By Joaquim Marques Bolufer
Wednesday, 13 de April, at 19 h.
in the Auditorium of the Museum of Xàbia
The talk will be in Castellano and English
The origins of this important building began in the 14th century with the construction of the current apse. But the population growth and attacks by pirates and privateers in that period made it advisable to increase its fortifications, so that it could fulfill a dual purpose, both religious and defensive.
Hence in 1513, work began under the supervision of the master builder from Navarra, Domingo Urteaga.
Several crypts and funeral urns are concealed under the present day cement floor. These are probably from the 16th century but are still to be excavated.
AMUX invite you to join them:
POSTPONED UNTIL THURSDAY 21st APRIL at 5.15 PM
Wednesday 20th April at 17:00
(unless there is a religious service)
To visit the church of San Bartolome (XIV century) in Jávea town
Tour of the Bell Tower*
The most outstanding building of the historical city centre of Jávea is undoubtedly the Iglesia-Fortaleza de San Bartolomé (St. Bartholomew Church-Fortress) dating from the 14th to the 16th Centuries, with expansions in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The main work is framed within the Isabelline Gothic style. Its importance and history motivated its declaration as a National Artistic Monument in 1931.
Visit led by Joaquim Bolufer, Xàbia’s Muncipal Archaeologist, Director of the Museum of Xàbia and President of the Amics del Museu de Xàbia.
A resume in English will be available and translation by a member of AMUX.
Meeting Point: the Museum main entrance at 16.50. Visit will last approximately 1.5 hours
