"SS Germaine, built by Irvine's Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by S. Castanos, Piraeus, was a Greek steamer of 2.573 tons. On October 28th, 1916, Germaine, on a voyage from Rosario to Marseille with a cargo of Maize, was sunk by the German submarine U-34 (Claus Rücker), 8 miles from Cape San Antonio, Spain."
